A downloadable guide to using school crossing patrols is available here (PDF 751Kb). More information on road safety is available here.
School Crossing Patrols have been a legal fixture in Britain since 1953 and the Transport Act of 2000 now permits the Patrol to cross any pedestrian.
These dedicated individuals help to create a safe environment for the walk to school and also help to teach valuable road safety skills.
The STOP MEANS STOP Campaign highlights the requirement for drivers to stop for Patrols and failure to do this could result in £1000 fine and 3 penalty points or disqualification.
The government’s expectation is that young infant school children should be able to walk 800 m (½ mile). Junior school children should be able to walk 1.6km (1 mile) and Secondary school children should be able to walk 3.2km (2 miles) and cycle 3 to 5 miles to school along safe routes.
Statistics show that in Bournemouth this is not happening at some schools.
If you ’Don’t live far? Don’t use the car!’ you will:
