NT Live: Travelling Light

Venue :    Regent Centre

Date :    9th - 10th

In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl
Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father's
cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timbermerchant,
and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make
moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way
of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl - now the famed American
film director Maurice Montgomery - looks back on his early life
and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams, both to himself and
those he left behind. Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter,
Nicholas Wright's new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to
the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in
Hollywood's golden age; and a haunting look at the stories we tell
about our own lives. The award-winning Antony Sher returns to the
National to play Jacob

BSO Dreams & Romance

Venue :    Lighthouse

Date :    15th

Schumann composed the Overture as a stand-alone work, later adding the Scherzo and Finale. He continued to revise them over the next twelve years. The Overture opens in dramatic fashion, the mood is dark and challenging until the lively major melody appears, lightening the mood. The Scherzo and Finale are, by turns, majestic, imitative and vivacious.

The Romance is one of the loveliest short works ever written and has become a popular concert piece. It is a highly characteristic work of Dvorák, combining his deep understanding of Classical form and Romantic harmony with beautiful flowing Slavonic melody.

Composed in 1841, Rêverie is the only piece of music written by Berlioz in a concertante style. He frequently used it on his concert tours abroad: it was played by several of the leading violinists of the age, among them Ferdinand David, Lipinski, Joachim and Wieniawski.

Brahms wrote this almost "symphony" serenade under the spell of Mozart's serenades and divertimentos and the septets and octets of Beethoven, Hummel, Schubert and Spohr. It is buoyantly fresh, inventive, spirited, and touching, and possesses a hearty rusticity and country-dance bumptiousness.

Sarah Gillespie

Sarah was born in London, to an American mother and British father, Her mother was from Minneapolis and she spent a lot of time in the USA, where she soaked up the sounds of Bessie Smith, Bob Dylan, Cole Porter and early blues and jazz. From the age of 18, she lived for a time in the US, busking and playing gigs.
John Fordham (The Guardian) described Sarah "an incandescent new presence who matches her imposing delivery with superior lyrics.... Gillespie, who joins Bob Dylan's lyrical bite and languid delivery to the forthrightness of Joni Mitchell, with a little rap-like percussiveness thrown in, is an original ... an incisive guitarist as well as an expressive singer, she's unquestioningly going places."

T-Rextasy

Venue :    Mr Kyps

Date :    18th

Following a hugely triumphant set at this year's Upbeat Festival, T-Rextasy are back at Mr Kyps to set the stage on fire once again!

When Marc Bolan sadly passed away on 16th September 1977 the nation mourned the loss of one of the cornerstones of the glam-rock movement.

Superfan 'Danielz', whilst overcome with grief from the loss of his hero, somehow managed to acquire the majority of Marc's wardrobe, and coupled with his mean guitar playing, proceeded to form T.Rextasy.

With full support and endorsement from a veritable smorgasbord of those associated with the late singer, from ex T-Rex members and 70s rock musicians, to Marc's brother and wife, Danielz has spent the last 20 years reminding us all just what we lost when THAT purple Mini hit THAT sycamore tree nearly 35 years ago.

Simon Townshend + The Frequency

Venue :    Mr Kyps

Date :    24th

A familiar name with an original sound, Simon Townshend is straight from the lineage of one of British music's most famous families. The son of England's top big-band reed man and baby brother of Who legend Pete Townshend, Simon has been recording and performing since the age of nine, when he was brought in to add vocals to The Who classic Tommy. He went on to successfully self-produce six well received solo CDs on the Stir Music label, including Among Us (1997), Animal Soup (1999), Bare Bodies Bare Assets (live acoustic)(2000), Ages (2000) and simontownshendis (2002). In 2002 Simon added to his musical arsenal by creating a stylistic alternative to his distinctive rock sound with an alter ego, .bom, for live performances in New York, Los Angeles and Boston. In 2005 Simon joined Bruce Foxton (The Jam/Stiff Little Fingers) and Mark Brzezicki (Big Country) in forming The Casbah Club, releasing Venustraphobia (2006). Simon is back in 2011 with the EP entitled Something New. The 4 track sampler is a preview of material from what may be his best and most impactful solo recording to date, the forthcoming 2012 release, Looking Out Looking In.

Macka B + Support

Venue :    Mr Kyps

Date :    25th

Macka B is one of Britain's most influential dancehall toasters, pushing the music back toward a Rastafarian political consciousness. His rough, gravelly vocals give him an instantly identifiable sound, and his production — chiefly handled by Mad Professor — updated dub reggae techniques for the dancehall age, proving that the two sounds weren't mutually exclusive.

Although the vast majority of Macka B's material is devoted to spiritual and social messages, he lightens the mood with occasional humorous novelty material. He shunned any aspirations for a commercial crossover, however, staying true to the sound and spirit of reggae's roots. His 1986 album Sign of the Times still remains a milestone of British reggae, and he continued to record for Mad Professor's Ariwa label into the new millennium.
